Personality:

Gambling: There is nothing Sanosuke would like to do more than gambling (except maybe eating and avoiding work). He often frequents one of the gambling houses in Tokyo, and has a lot of friends there. Sanosuke however, also has unbelievably bad luck in dice, and usually loses. He refuses to admit he has bad luck though, so he keeps on playing (and losing).

Lazy: Sanosuke is perhaps the main freeloader in the Kamiya Dojo; he eats, sometimes sleeps there, but never offers any type of payment, and would often try to get out of doing jobs for Kaoru as much as he can. He likes to lounge about, insult Kaoru's cooking, and watch Kenshin and Yahiko work. The only contribution he can make is that he can make good barbecued fish; although he usually cooks it only for himself. He hates work, has no job, but always seems to know how to get himself three (or more) square meals a day. He does have place to stay in a small apartment in the more run-down parts of Tokyo.

Eating and drinking: Sanosuke is always broke, having no real source of income. Unfortunately, he loves to eat, and the only thing he can beat Kenshin at is drinking sake. He usually remedies his lack of money by going to the Kamiya Dojo for a meal (and even eat Kaoru's cooking if he's desperate enough) or head down to the Akabeko restaurant for some grub. He doesn't pay though, so the owner Tae Sekihara puts it on his debts. With interest. And it's getting longer by the day; Tae was going to be very rich if Sano ever does pay, which is unlikely.

Brawls: Sanosuke also loves brawls, and is the first to jump into the fight should it be necessary. After which, he usually goes over to Dr. Genzai's office for Megumi to patch him up (for free, naturally)

No sense of direction: Sanosuke can't find his way out of a house if it only had one door. He attempted to follow Kenshin to Kyoto after the latter left during the first stages of the Kyoto arc storyline, only to become hopelessly lost in the forests along the way, despite having a compass with him. Finally, he decided to get in trouble and land in jail, so he could at least figure out where he was.
